"Being Bilingual Is Enough" Is a Dangerous Myth!

The Real Preparation Behind Students Who Land Goldman Sachs, McKinsey, and Mitsubishi Corporation Offers!

Boston Career Forum Preparation for International Students|The Essential Approach Used by Students Who Land Offers at Goldman Sachs and Mitsubishi Corporation

Hi, this is TJ, the CEO of Alpha Academy!

Every year, we receive many inquiries from international students who say things like "I want to work at a top Japanese company" or "I want to take on the Boston Career Forum." These are outstanding students attending prestigious schools such as Harvard, Stanford, Columbia, and UCLA, or top universities in Japan like the University of Tokyo, Waseda, and Keio.

But let me be honest with you. The gap between international students who succeed at the Boston Career Forum and those who fall short is far wider than most people imagine. Today, I want to share exactly what, when, and at what level of intensity the students who receive offers from Goldman Sachs, Mitsubishi Corporation, McKinsey, and other elite employers actually prepare.

What Is the Boston Career Forum (BosCareer)?

The Boston Career Forum is the world's largest recruiting event for bilingual talent in Japanese and English, held every November in Boston. Companies such as Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, JP Morgan, UBS, Mitsubishi Corporation, Mitsui & Co., Itochu, Sumitomo Corporation, Marubeni, McKinsey, BCG, Bain, Accenture, SoftBank Group, Nintendo, Nomura, Mizuho, and the global tracks of major Japanese banks all gather in one place, representing the pinnacle of the Japanese recruiting market.

For international students, it is a rare opportunity to access top tier employers in Japan. With Japanese proficiency (ideally JLPT N1) and English fluency, you can apply to bulge bracket investment banks, global consulting firms, Japanese securities houses, Japanese trading houses, and the global recruiting tracks of megabanks.

The Three Traps International Students Fall Into

After 18 years of supporting international students through the recruiting process, three common mistakes stand out among those who fail to land offers.

Trap 1: The "I'll be fine" mindset
Being enrolled at a top school such as the University of Tokyo, Waseda, Keio, an Ivy League school, UC Berkeley, LSE, or Oxbridge is certainly a plus. But every international student at BosCareer holds credentials of a similar or even higher caliber. Simply "studying abroad," "speaking English," or "having a strong GPA" does not set you apart at all.

Trap 2: A serious lack of industry and business knowledge
Can you explain the difference between the Investment Banking Division (IBD) and FIC & Equity (Sales and Trading) at a bulge bracket investment bank? Do you know how the strategies of Mitsubishi Corporation and Mitsui & Co. differ? How are Marubeni, Sumitomo Corporation, and Itochu positioned against one another? What about buy side versus sell side, DCF, LBO, M&A fundamentals, the current state of capital markets, and macro trends in FX and interest rates? Walking into an interview without a solid grasp of these topics almost always ends in rejection.

Trap 3: Not enough action, driven by a mindset of retreat
"I don't know exactly what I want to do yet, so maybe BosCareer is too early for me." "My resume isn't ready, so I'll just walk in to Tokyo Summer Career Forum and get a feel for the atmosphere." This kind of thinking is the most dangerous of all. Recruiting comes down to reps. A student who has done 20 interviews carries an overwhelmingly stronger presence than one who has done just one, in speaking style, in logic, and in confidence.

What Successful International Students Actually Do

Students who win offers at BosCareer consistently do the following.

・Conduct 10 or more informational interviews with alumni per target company
・Rigorously study industry structure, company operations, and business models
・Practice case interviews, Fermi estimation, and technical interviews repeatedly
・Refine resumes, cover letters, and application essays to the highest polish
・Reach a level of offer readiness within the three months from June to August
・Build the schedule backward from the late August investment banking application deadlines

The most important truth to internalize is this. Your job is to make the interviewer feel, "I absolutely have to hire this student." Writing a perfect resume is not enough. Rehearsing interviews mechanically is not enough. What is truly being tested is your ability to win over the person sitting across from you. That is a sales skill. That is a presence skill. That is a real interpersonal communication skill.

How Do You Make an Interviewer Say, "I Want This Student"?

This is the very heart of BosCareer preparation. Let me tell you plainly what most international students overlook.

Yes, personal reflection and motivation matter. Yes, logic, meaning persuasiveness and structured thinking, also matters. But those alone will not get you an offer.

Why? Because what an interviewer ultimately decides is one thing and one thing only. Do I want to hire this student, out of everyone I have met? That single judgment determines everything.

Even with flawless documents and airtight logic, if you cannot move the interviewer emotionally, you will be cut. On the other hand, if you can make the interviewer feel "I absolutely must have this student on my team," the offer follows naturally. Students who succeed at BosCareer understand this truth and sharpen the following qualities.

・Quality of alumni informational interviews: Meeting 10 or more professionals per company, deepening your understanding of the industry and firm, so that your interview responses carry undeniable credibility

・Depth of thinking: Going beyond superficial motivations to articulate, in multiple layers of insight, why this industry, why this company, and why you

・Action orientation: When in doubt, move. Write the resume. Take the interview. Meet the professionals. Refine yourself through real experience

・Decisiveness: At a high stakes moment like BosCareer, showing your intent clearly on the spot and demonstrating true commitment to the company

・Industry knowledge: Being able to speak fluently on the difference between IBD and Sales and Trading, the strategic contrasts among Japanese trading houses, and the cultural differences among top consulting firms

・Genuine commitment: Looking the interviewer in the eye, in Japanese and in English, and delivering the message "I want to work at this company" with unmistakable conviction

The competition you are up against includes students from Harvard, Stanford, and Japan's top universities such as the University of Tokyo, Waseda, and Keio, along with other equally talented international students. Credentials alone will not differentiate you. English ability alone will not differentiate you. What determines who gets the offer is the total package that makes an interviewer say, "I want this student."

And this total package cannot be built alone. You need a mentor who gives you honest feedback, real practice environments, and industry insiders who know the game inside out. Only when these three elements come together does someone become truly ready to receive an offer. That is exactly why we hope you will reach out to Alpha Academy as early as possible.

The Company You Join After Graduation Shapes Your Entire Career

Here is a hard truth. Students who land at top tier firms straight out of school continue to access top tier opportunities in the lateral market and at top MBA programs. Once you land at a second tier or third tier employer, however, reversing course is extremely difficult in Japan's recruiting market.

That is why the months from June through BosCareer in November are the defining stretch of your life. It would be a tragedy to have gone through the effort of studying abroad only to miss out because of inadequate preparation.

"I studied abroad, and I want to launch my career at a top company in Japan." "I want the first step of my global career to be in the best possible environment." If that ambition speaks to you, please reach out early. The earlier you start, the greater your advantage becomes. Let us take on BosCareer together, and win big.
