Company Overview

Point72 Asset Management is a U.S. based hedge fund founded in 2014 by Steve Cohen. Headquartered in Stamford, Connecticut, the firm maintains offices in major global cities including New York, London, Hong Kong, Singapore, and Tokyo.
As of the end of 2025, Point72 manages approximately $41.5 billion in assets under management and employs more than 3,000 people, making it one of the largest hedge funds in the world.

Cohen previously ran SAC Capital Advisors, where he built a decades long reputation as one of Wall Street's top investors. Point72 was established as the successor to that legacy in 2014, and after reopening to outside investors in 2018, the firm has grown rapidly.

The performance numbers are equally impressive. Point72 delivered a return of approximately 19% in 2024, outpacing peers such as Citadel (15.1%) and Millennium (15%). In 2025, the firm achieved roughly 17.5% returns, and its cumulative three year return stands at approximately twice that of the S&P 500.

What Does Point72 Actually Do?

In a single sentence: Point72 is a multistrategy hedge fund that pursues absolute returns by combining multiple investment strategies. The three core strategies are as follows.

◼︎Fundamental Equities
This is Point72's largest division. Sector specialized teams covering technology, healthcare, energy, financials, and more execute long/short equity strategies, buying undervalued stocks and shorting overvalued ones, backed by deep company research and financial analysis.

◼︎Cubist Systematic Strategies (Quantitative Division)
This division uses data and quantitative models to execute systematic trading strategies across equities, fixed income, currencies, and commodities. AUM stands at approximately $7 billion, supported by more than 50 independent quant teams and a central research group of roughly 100 professionals.

◼︎Global Macro
This strategy analyzes macroeconomic trends across interest rates, currencies, and geopolitical risks, deploying capital across markets worldwide. Its low correlation to other strategies contributes meaningfully to overall portfolio diversification.

In addition, since 2025, Point72 has entered the private credit space, expanding into areas such as asset based finance and real estate credit.

Organizational Structure: What Is a "Pod"?

Any serious discussion of Point72 requires understanding the "pod," the firm's core organizational unit. Point72 operates through more than 190 independent investment teams, known as pods, each functioning as its own P&L center.
Each pod is built around a Portfolio Manager (PM) and typically consists of anywhere from a few to over a dozen analysts.

PMs operate with significant discretion, all within the umbrella of the firm's centralized risk management framework.
Strong performance is rewarded with exceptional compensation, but pods that underperform can be restructured or dissolved. It is a demanding, meritocratic environment.
This multimanager (MM) model, shared by peers like Citadel and Millennium, is the governance structure that underlies the firm's consistently strong returns.

Open Roles at Point72

◼︎Investment and Portfolio Management
・Portfolio Manager (PM): Bears direct responsibility for investment performance and makes final investment decisions.
・Equity Financial Analyst: Conducts company research, builds financial models, and generates investment ideas.
・Credit Analyst: Performs credit analysis within the private credit division.
・Quantitative Researcher: Develops models and conducts statistical analysis for the Cubist division.
・Macro Portfolio Manager: Manages discretionary strategies within the Global Macro division.

◼︎Technology and Data
・Data Engineer: Builds investment infrastructure (compensation range approximately $200K to $300K).
・Machine Learning Researcher: Develops AI driven investment models.

Compensation at Point72 is among the highest in the industry. Equity analysts typically earn between $150K and $250K, while quantitative researchers average around $200K. For PMs, performance driven compensation well into the millions of dollars is a realistic outcome.

How to Break Into Point72

This is what most people want to know. The bottom line is that there are three main paths into Point72.

Route ①: Point72 Academy (Most Important)

This is a 10 month paid training program run by Point72 itself. Acceptance rates are said to be under 1%, making it extraordinarily competitive, yet it is open to candidates from all academic backgrounds, not just finance. Point72 has hired physicists, lawyers, military veterans, and healthcare professionals through this program.
An "Experienced Professionals Program" track also exists for working professionals, making this a viable path for career changers from other industries.
The Tokyo office runs a Japan specific initiative called "Point72 LaunchPoint," and today roughly half of Tokyo's PMs came through that program.

Route ②: Investment Banking or Equity Research

This route involves spending one to three years at a top tier investment bank in IBD or equity research, then applying through experienced hire recruiting (which runs throughout the year). Candidates who can demonstrate strong modeling skills and sector expertise have a real shot at being placed directly into one of Point72's pods. It is the most conventional path, which also means the competition is fierce.

Route ③: Cubist Quant Academy (Quantitative Track)

This training program is designed for candidates with strong backgrounds in mathematics, statistics, or computer science. It is well suited for graduate researchers and professionals transitioning from quantitative or technical fields.

Recommended Graduate Programs for Aspiring Point72 Candidates

That said, breaking in directly is extremely difficult in practice. For candidates without finance industry experience, lateral hiring as an experienced professional is close to impossible regardless of academic credentials.
For most people, the most realistic path runs through a graduate program abroad. Deciding which country, school, and program to pursue involves a range of important decisions. Below is a breakdown by objective.

MBA Programs (For Fundamental and Macro Tracks)

If your goal is to become a fundamental or macro PM or analyst at a hedge fund, an MBA is a strong option. For hedge fund careers specifically, you will generally want to attend a school with serious finance depth.

・Wharton (University of Pennsylvania): Renowned for the depth of its finance curriculum and an unrivaled alumni network.
・Chicago Booth: Its quantitative, academically rigorous approach is a strong fit for analytically driven funds like Point72.
・Columbia Business School: Known as the home of value investing, with one of the highest hedge fund placement rates of any MBA program.
・Harvard Business School: Among the very top in both hedge fund placement rates and starting compensation.

Master in Finance Programs (Great for Early Career Candidates: Academic Rigor Meets Practical Application)

Master in Finance programs, typically completed in one to one and a half years, are gaining attention for their strong return on investment. They are accessible to candidates with fewer years of experience than an MBA typically requires and offer a structured way to build quantitative skills.

・MIT Sloan MFin: Balances quantitative methodology with real world application, serving as a strong launchpad across a wide range of finance careers.
・Columbia University Financial Economics: Located in New York, the global center of hedge fund activity, with meaningful synergies with Columbia's MBA network and Value Investing Program.
・University of Chicago MFin: Carries the intellectual rigor and quantitative tradition of Chicago Booth, making it a strong fit for analytically oriented funds like Point72.

MFE Programs (For Quant and Data Tracks)

If your target is a systematic strategy division like Cubist, an MFE (Master of Financial Engineering) is the most direct path. These programs also have broad applicability, and an MFE to fundamental division path is entirely feasible. For anyone who simply wants to get into a hedge fund and is open on the specifics, an MFE is our top recommendation.

United States
・Carnegie Mellon MSCF: Unmatched track record of placements at Goldman Sachs, Citadel, Point72, and other top firms. Among the very best for quant careers nationwide.
・UCLA Anderson MFE: Well regarded for placement rates and starting salaries, with strong connections to tech oriented funds on the West Coast.
・Columbia University MFE: A New York location translates to a powerful network and direct access to Wall Street hedge funds and investment banks.
・NYU Tandon MFE: Manhattan access combined with a practice oriented curriculum. One of the larger MFE programs by enrollment, which means a broad recruiting base.
・University of Chicago Financial Mathematics: Backed by Chicago Booth's strength in economics and financial theory, with top tier quant credentials and strong cultural and geographic proximity to Point72 and Citadel.
・Baruch College MFE: Directly confirmed placement records at Point72 and Millennium, with outstanding cost efficiency relative to outcomes.

Singapore

・National University of Singapore MFE: Ranks at the top for English language instruction, cost of attendance, and Asia based placement outcomes. Strong track record of admitting candidates from non quantitative academic backgrounds as well.
・Nanyang Technological University MFE: Among the strongest networks connecting graduates to hedge funds and asset managers in Asia. Considered the top financial engineering program in the region, with an exchange program partnership with CMU.
・Singapore Management University: Widely recognized across Asia for its finance and quant programs, featuring a curriculum with strong exposure to practitioners and industry professionals.

Wrapping Up

As you can see, Point72 is a multifaceted firm with distinct divisions, investment philosophies, and hiring pathways. The key is figuring out which strategy and route makes the most sense for you. And even within that path, there are important decisions to make around country, school, and program selection.
