Starting with the incoming class for the 2026 to 2027 academic year, Yale will change as follows.

・Families earning less than $200,000 per year → Tuition effectively free
At this point, many readers outside the United States will likely think:
"Surely this only applies to American students."
That is not the case. International students qualify under exactly the same terms. Yale is one of the very few universities in the United States that maintains a "need blind policy for international students," meaning it covers 100 percent of demonstrated financial need through grants, with zero loans, regardless of nationality or visa status.
In other words, these same conditions apply to you, even if you are applying from outside the United States.
It Is Not Just Yale! A Comparison of the Top 4 US Universities
Over the past year or two, America's most elite universities have, one after another, rolled out policies that make tuition free for middle income and lower income families. Here is a summary of the major schools.

・Families earning less than $100,000 → Zero Parent Share (all expenses, travel, insurance, plus a $2,000 startup grant)
・Families earning less than $200,000 → Scholarship equivalent to or exceeding the full cost of tuition
・Same terms apply to international students, regardless of citizenship or visa status
What Does This Mean for Families?
Take Japan as an example. The average household income is approximately $35,000. The top 10 percent of households earn around $85,000, and the top 5 percent earn about $100,000. Similar income distributions apply to most countries outside the United States.
What this means is simple. The overwhelming majority of families worldwide would qualify for "free tuition" or better at at least one of the four universities listed above.
The long held assumption that "the Ivy League costs around $90,000 per year. There is no way our family could ever afford that" no longer holds true from 2026 onward.
If you can secure admission, the university will cover the cost. Money is no longer the obstacle.
This is the new reality at the world's top universities.
But "Nothing Starts Until You Are Admitted"
No matter how generous the financial aid is, the fundamental prerequisite is admission. And the acceptance rates at Yale, Harvard, MIT, and Princeton all hover around 4 to 6 percent. There is no question that these are the most competitive universities in the world.

TJ Profile
TJ began his career at Sumitomo Corporation in Corporate Accounting, overseeing budgeting, financial reporting, and performance management for more than 800 global subsidiaries, as well as IR activities. He was selected as the youngest trainee at Sumitomo Corporation of America in New York, contributing to the restructuring of a U.S. steel business. He later joined Project Finance, arranging large scale financings for international infrastructure projects and telecommunications. Chosen as a company sponsored MBA candidate.
He earned his MBA from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business, concentrating in Finance and Entrepreneurship. He founded the University of Chicago Japanese Association and launched the school’s first Japan Trip, now an annual tradition.
TJ subsequently joined Goldman Sachs Japan Investment Banking Division, advising on M&A in the media and consumer sectors, IPOs and capital raising, and private equity and restructuring assignments.
He was selected as a fellow in the Entrepreneurial Leadership Program by Keizai Doyukai, receiving mentorship from top business leaders including H.I.S. Chairman Hideo Sawada.
As President of the Chicago Booth Alumni Association in Japan, he guided candidates to leading MBA programs and global universities. His students have secured roles at firms including Mitsubishi Corporation, McKinsey, Goldman Sachs, BlackRock, Google, Big 4 consulting/FAS, Toyota, MUFG, and Nomura.
