"My child hasn't started the essays yet." That is a red flag.

"We want our child to attend a top university overseas."
We are receiving a surge of inquiries from parents with exactly this goal. The Ivy League, Stanford and MIT, elite liberal arts colleges like Williams and Amherst, top public universities like UC Berkeley and UCLA, and the most selective institutions in the UK and Asia such as Oxbridge, LSE, NUS and HKU. But among all these consultations, one sentence alarms me more than any other.

"We'll start the essays in the fall, right?"

Let me be direct. That will be too late. What separates admits from rejects at the world's top universities is not test scores or grades. It is the depth of the essay. And a truly deep essay cannot be written in a few weeks. The Early Decision and Early Action deadlines fall on November 1. Counting backward from today, you have roughly four months.

1. When Is Early Decision? Key Deadlines At A Glance

First, the facts. Early application rounds at top US universities fall into three categories.

ED I, EA, REA (Deadline: November 1)

ED II (Deadline: January 1 to 15)

Emory, NYU, Tufts and many top liberal arts colleges such as Swarthmore, Pomona and Bowdoin offer ED II. This is a critical second first choice card if ED I does not work out.

Regular Decision (Deadline: January 1 to 5)

The standard round. At top schools, RD acceptance rates are often less than half of ED rates.

The battle is decided on November 1. And to submit your best possible essay on November 1, this summer is everything.

2. Why Early Decision Is A Decisive Advantage

ED is, in essence, a contract with the university. You are saying, you are my first choice, and if admitted, I will enroll. For top universities, and especially for liberal arts colleges that care deeply about yield, ED applicants are exactly who they want.

・At many top schools, ED acceptance rates are two to three times higher than RD
・Liberal arts colleges in particular scrutinize whether applicants truly understand their educational model, and ED demonstrates that commitment
・Some universities fill 40 to 50 percent of their incoming class through ED

But here lies the trap. ED is a one school commitment. You get exactly one card to play. That is precisely why playing your ED card with a mediocre essay is the single worst strategic mistake you can make.

3. A Truly Deep Essay Takes Four Months To Write

The Common App Essay, at 650 words, plus each school's supplemental essays, these few thousand words will shape your child's life. Out of tens of thousands of essays, admissions officers stop only at those with genuine introspection and a voice that belongs to that student alone. They never stop at a list of accomplishments.

Here is what the process of writing a truly deep essay actually looks like.

・July: Self inventory and brainstorming. Who am I? Which experiences made me who I am? An essay built on shallow self reflection stays shallow, no matter how polished the English becomes
・August: Draft and redraft the Common App Essay. The first draft is never the final draft. Admits to top schools typically rewrite their essays ten or more times
・September: Design the supplemental essays. Answer why this college with real resolution, naming specific professors, programs and curricular structures. An essay that works with any university's name swapped in is dead on arrival
・October: Final polish and full application integration. Confirm that essays, activities list and recommendations function as one coherent story

Work backward and the conclusion is obvious. Unless you start this very moment, a world class essay will not be ready by November 1.

4. The Essay Rules You Absolutely Cannot Break: Ivy League Versus Liberal Arts Colleges

So what, concretely, makes an essay deep? Here are the non negotiables, from the admissions officer's point of view.

The Five Universal Principles Of Top School Essays

One. Never re list your accomplishments. Repeating what is already in your activities list and honors section wastes precious space. Admissions officers have already read your entire file. What they want from the essay is not what you did, but how the experience changed how you think. Show, don't tell, is the iron rule. Abstract declarations like "I am passionate about" or "I learned the importance of" must be replaced with vivid, concrete scenes.

Two. Don't let a grand theme erase you. Many applicants, international students especially, try to tackle sweeping social issues and end up disappearing from their own essay. The protagonist of your essay is always you as a human being. An essay that draws deep reflection out of a small, everyday moment, a failure on a sports team, a conversation with family, is overwhelmingly stronger than a grand thesis with no author in it.

Three. Divide the labor between the Common App Essay and the supplementals. The Common App Essay is for character, values and growth. The supplementals are for fit with that specific university. Confuse the two, writing a second personal narrative in a supplemental, and the reader concludes you never answered why us. Design the entire application as one portfolio, with zero overlap between essays.

Four. Reach real resolution on why this college. If your essay still works after swapping in another university's name, it is effectively an automatic rejection. Name specific professors, specific programs, specific curricular structures, and connect them in a single line: your past experience, this university's concrete resources, what you intend to do in the future. Not a paraphrase of the website, but a genuine answer to why this is necessary for me.

Five. Three traps that catch international applicants.

・Imported modesty: self deprecation such as "I am still inexperienced, but" earns zero credit
・A narrative of nothing but effort and perseverance: without intellectual curiosity and an original point of view, the essay sinks without a trace
・Over polished English: in today's environment, an essay so heavily edited that a 17 year old's authentic voice has vanished can backfire, including raising suspicion of AI generation

Ivy League Specific: Impact And Cultural Fit

The Ivy League, HYP above all, meaning Harvard, Yale and Princeton, evaluates applicants through the lens of what this student will bring to our campus and to the world. Leadership, initiative and ripple effects on a community must be shown through concrete actions, never inflated claims.

Just as important, the eight Ivies want very different people. Brown prizes the Open Curriculum and intellectual freedom. Dartmouth prizes its tight knit community. Columbia prizes the Core Curriculum and New York City. UPenn prizes pragmatism and interdisciplinarity. Writing all eight schools in the same tone is a strategic error.

Liberal Arts College Specific: Answer Why A LAC, Not A University

What Williams, Amherst and Swarthmore scrutinize most is this. Does this applicant genuinely understand our educational model, or are we a backup to the Ivies? Small seminar discussion, closeness to professors, learning across disciplines, contribution to a residential community. If the essay does not radiate authentic commitment to these, the yield conscious LACs will pass.

Because a LAC is a residential community of a few thousand people, the question would we want to live with this person for four years carries real weight. Alongside intellectual edge, the writing must convey dialogue, collaboration and curiosity about other people. Concrete references to institutions like the Williams Tutorial or Swarthmore's Honors Program are highly effective.

In short, the Ivies reward impact and intellectual excellence. The LACs reward understanding of their educational model and community fit. Executing this differentiation across multiple schools, in just four months, is nearly impossible alone.

TJ began his career at Sumitomo Corporation in Corporate Accounting, overseeing budgeting, financial reporting, and performance management for more than 800 global subsidiaries, as well as IR activities. He was selected as the youngest trainee at Sumitomo Corporation of America in New York, contributing to the restructuring of a U.S. steel business. He later joined Project Finance, arranging large scale financings for international infrastructure projects and telecommunications. Chosen as a company sponsored MBA candidate.

He earned his MBA from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business, concentrating in Finance and Entrepreneurship. He founded the University of Chicago Japanese Association and launched the school’s first Japan Trip, now an annual tradition.

TJ subsequently joined Goldman Sachs Japan Investment Banking Division, advising on M&A in the media and consumer sectors, IPOs and capital raising, and private equity and restructuring assignments.

Emi Sakashita

After graduating from Joshi Gakuin, Emi Sakashita advanced directly to the University of Tokyo, where she studied brain function, memory and depression (including hippocampal research) at the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences and the Graduate School of Pharmaceutical Sciences. After graduation, she worked at a pharmaceutical company developing new central nervous system drugs, including antidepressants. She later pursued graduate studies in clinical psychology at Columbia University, researching cognitive behavioral therapy, developmental psychology and related work on depression and social withdrawal. She serves as COO of Alpha Genius and also leads Mental Lab, an online support program grounded in neuroscience and clinical psychology.

As a child, she advanced more than four grade levels ahead through the Kumon method, mastering fourth grade level math before even entering elementary school.
